On December 18, 2016, the 2016 Symposium on Buddhist Ideology and the book launch of Ren Jian Fo Jiao Lun Cong (Essays and Books on Humanistic Buddhism) were co-organized by Chinese Buddhist Culture Research Institute, Institute for Ethics and Religions Studies, Tsinghua University, and Beijing Buddhist Cultural Institute, held at Beijing Shichahai Ancient College. Guests in attendance included the executives and leaders of State Administration for Religious Affairs of P.R.C., The Buddhist Association of China, Academy of Religious Studies, Peking University, Institute of World Religions and Beijing Buddhist Association.
The one-day symposium included four parts with discussion focused around the topic of “Buddhism and how to decommercialize Buddhism in commercial times”. Abbot of Lingyin Temple Ven. Guangquan was invited to give a lecture entitled Where does the dust collect itself? An exploration of how to decommercialize Buddhism. He expressed his ideas on the history of Chinese Buddhism, the Buddhism-based concepts in how to decommercialize Buddhism, as well as the national policies and the development and innovation of temple management. The four parts of the symposium were hosted by Master Shengkai, Professor Huang Xianian, Master Jingyin and Master Mingjie. At the end of the symposium, the vice-director of The Buddhist Association of China Master Zongxing made the concluding remarks for the symposium.
