Abbot Guangquan of Lingyin Temple Leads Devotees to Putuo Mountain for Pilgrimage

On July 11, 2024, the sixth day of the sixth month in the lunar calendar, Abbot Guangquan of Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou led the resident monks and lay Buddhists of the temple in a pilgrimage to the sacred Bodhimanda (holy site for Buddhist practice) of Guanyin Bodhisattva at Putuo Mountain. At 7:20 a.m., the procession, led by Abbot Guangquan, began their journey from the mountain gate plaque at the Putuo Mountain Pier by offering incense, proceeding along the ancient path of incense, paying respects and bowing reverently.

During the peak of summer with scorching temperatures, the unwavering faith and determination of the pilgrims were not affected. Guided by the clear sound of the bell, they marched in unison, bowing to the ground in a full prostration every three steps and heading towards the boundless compassion and wisdom of Guanyin Bodhisattva. The procession stretched for hundreds of meters, attracting curious onlookers along the way who were either touched or inspired to join, showcasing their dedication to the pilgrimage and accumulating great merit.

Approaching midday at around 11 a.m., the group gradually arrived at Puji Temple. As they entered the Yuantong Hall of Puji Temple, their exhaustion and sweat transformed into profound joy and supreme coolness. Many were moved to tears, overwhelmed with happiness and a sense of accomplishment like never before.

A group from the Yunlin Volunteers of Lingyin Temple was instrumental in supporting the pilgrimage, meticulously assisting with tasks ranging from water supply and medication distribution to waste collection. Their dedication ensured the orderly progression of the pilgrimage, reflecting a positive image of the Buddhist community in Hangzhou.
