The Hangzhou Buddhist Academy is a comprehensive Buddhist institution approved by the National Religious Affairs Administration, organized by the Zhejiang Buddhist Association, and hosted by the Hangzhou Buddhist Association. The academy traces its root to the Hangzhou Wulin Buddhist Academy, which was founded in 1946 by Venerable Master Taixu and Venerable Master Juzan. Focusing on Buddhist theoretical education, the academy also highlights Buddhist art education. Since its establishment in 1998, it has upheld the fine traditions of the Hangzhou Wulin Buddhist Academy, dedicated to promoting Buddhism with Chinese characteristics. Its educational mission integrates Buddhist learning and practice, fostering a monastic lifestyle for its students.

The guiding principles of the academy emphasizes "Buddhist learning and practice as the foundation, Buddhist academic research as the core, and Buddhist art education as the distinctive feature." The academy’s motto is "Be cautious in monastic conduct; Be diligent in learning; Be positive in thinking; Be steadfast in practice."

The academy is committed to cultivating patriotic and devoted Buddhist talents who value both learning and practice while also possessing a strong sense of historical mission and social responsibility. Currently, it comprises four departments: the Department of Buddhist Doctrine, the Department of Buddhist Arts (offering majors in Buddhist Fine Arts and Buddhist Music), the Department of Foreign Languages (offering majors in Sanskrit, Buddhist English, and Buddhist Japanese), and the Department of Monastic Management (offering in-service degree education).

Since 1998, over 600 students have graduated from the academy. To further advance Buddhist education in line with contemporary needs, the academy has received approval from the National Religious Affairs Administration to establish new programs. In addition to the existing majors and departments, a new Department of Buddhist Precepts (offering a major in Buddhist Precepts) will be introduced. After thorough preparation, the academy plans to enrol in-service undergraduate students starting in the spring of 2025.
