The Essence of Buddhism

Juyi Bai asked Zen Master Niaochao, “what is the essence of Buddhism?”

Zen Master Niaochao answered, “avoid all evil, do all good.”

Juyi Bai snorted, “Even a three-year-old kid knows this saying.”

The Zen master said, “Although a three-year-old kid knows it, an eighty-year-old greybeard may be incapable to do it.”  That is how things usually go in the world; it is easier said than done. To imbue this teaching throughout our daily conduct will require nothing less than redoubling all of our efforts.
