Master Longtan in the Tang Dynasty was very poor before he became a Buddhist monk. He then lived on selling pancakes and had no roof to live under, so Master Daowu lent him a small house near the temple.
To show his gratitude, Longtan sent ten pancakes to Master Daowu every day. Master Daowu always gave one of the pancakes back to Longtan and said, “This is for you and I wish you numerous descendants.”
Longtan was really confused, so one day he asked Master Daowu for an explanation. Master Daowu answered, “What is wrong with my sending back what you have sent to me?”
Hearing this, Longtan was enlightened and later became a great Buddhist master.
