Zen Master Foyin and Su Dongpo took a trip to Lingyin Temple together. When they came to the statue of the Guanyin Bodhisattva, Zen Master Foyin put his palms together in salute and prayed.
Suddenly, Su Dongpo asked, “Everyone prays to the Guanyin Bodhisattva with a string of prayer beads in his hands, but why does the Guanyin Bodhisattva also have the same string of beads in his hands? Whom does he pray to?”
Zen Master Foyin said, “To the Guanyin Bodhisattva.”
Su Shi asked, “Why does he pray to himself?”
Zen Master Foyin replied, “He knows it clearer than us that it is better to rely on yourself than on others.”
