In the early autumn of 1925, Master Hongyi was left stranded by war at Qita Temple in the city of Ningbo.
One day, his old friend Xia Mianzun paid him a visit. Seeing that there was only one dish of salted vegetable on the table, Xia could not help but ask, “Isn’t it too salty?”
“Salty as it is, it has its own taste,” said Master Hongyi.
After the meal, Master Hongyi poured himself a cup of plain water.
Xia asked again, “Isn’t there any tea? Why do you drink that tasteless water?”
Master Hongyi laughed and said, “Tasteless as it is, it has its own taste too.”
